Christmas tree : AMs and typescript, [between 1921 and ca. 1930].

Unpublished short story. Three autograph pages, with a five-page typescript which incorporates changes noted on the manuscript and some additional new phrases. The title "Love" at the head of the manuscript, followed by the first line of that extant but unpublished short story, argue for the composition of "Christmas tree" in 1921, when Faulkner was working for Doubleday's in New York and writing "Love". In 1933 or 1934, Faulkner told his agent that "Christmas tree" had been written "years ago", that he had mislaid the manuscript and "from memory" written another version. The later version, which has nothing in common with "Christmas tree" except the character Doris's name and an impromptu marriage, was published in January 1936 as "Two dollar wife".
